What is TMJ/TMD?

TMJ/TMD is a condition that causes chronic headaches, back, neck and shoulder pain and several other painful symptoms. Oftentimes these symptoms are not immediately associated with a misaligned bite, and you can endure years of suffering before being properly diagnosed.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a condition in which your bite becomes misaligned, causing many serious painful health problems. Sometimes the acronym TMJ will be used interchangeably with TMD, but TMJ actually stands for temporomandibular joint. Neuromuscular dentistry differs from traditional dentistry in that neuromuscular dentists are trained in proper alignment of the jaw in relation to the muscles that control its function. Over 15% of American adults suffer from chronic facial pain related to the temporomandibular joint.

Neuromuscular dentistry is wholly focused on improving the health and longevity of your bite. It can include diagnosing and treating symptoms related to your teeth, gums, nerves, muscles, bones, and jaw joints. If you are suffering from symptoms associated with TMJ/TMD, you don't need to live with the pain any longer. Contact us today to schedule your consultation and start on the path to wellness.

Using special diagnostic equipment and many years of extensive training, we can effectively diagnose the symptoms you are having, properly align your bite and help you find your beautiful smile again.

The pain you are experiencing in your TMJ can be treated in a variety of ways including stress-reducing exercises, muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medication, wearing mouth guards to prevent teeth clenching and grinding, and neuromuscular functional orthodontics. Dr. Gyurina will recommend what treatment is best for your particular set of symptoms and diagnosis.

A highly trained neuromuscular dentist such as Dr. Gyurina can identify the source of your joint pain with a thorough exam and appropriate x-rays. She will check your joints for clicking and popping noises or difficulty in moving those joints.
